徐志摩的散文(7)

　　①维多利亚，英国女王(1837--1901).在位期间，英国大量扩展海外殖民地，取得世界贸易和工业的垄断地位，是英国历史上的”黄金时代“。

　　②The Dynast，即《列王》。

　　③意为：“‘……人类终将消亡.随它去吧。’我对所爱的人说”。

　　在一八九五年他写——

　　If way to the better there be, it exacts a full look at the

　　worst .....①

　　在一九OO年他写——

　　That I could think there trembled through his happy good—night air Some

　　blessed Hope，whereof he knew and 1 was unaware.②

　　在一九二二年他写——

　　.....·the greatest Of things ischarity'”...”③

　　①意为：“倘如还有通向更好的生活之路，那么就迫切需要充分认识最糟的生活状态……”

　　②意为：“我可以想象他遭晚安时快乐而颤抖的歌声，有些歌是为希而祈祷，对此他明白而我却一无所知.”这段话引自哈代的(黑暗中的画眉，，文中的“他”指画眉。

　　③意为：“最伟大的是博爱。”

　　哈代不是一个武装的悲观论者，虽然他有时在表现上不能制止他的愤慨与抑郁。上面的几节征引可以证见就在他最烦闷最黑暗的时刻他也不放弃他为他的思想寻求一条出路的决心——为人类前途寻求一条出路的决心。他的写实，他的所谓悲观，正是他在思想上的忠实与勇敢。他在一九二二年发表的一篇诗序说到他作诗的旨趣，有极重要的一段话;——

　　......That comments on where the world standsv is very much the reverse or needless in these disordered years of a prematurely afflicted century：that amendment and not madness lies that way......that whether the human and kindred animal races survive till the exhaustion or destruction of the globe，of whether races perish and are succeeded by others before thatconclusioncomes,paintOall upomt，tongued or dumb，shall be kept down to minimum by Loving— kindness， operating through scientific knowledge， and actuated by themodicum of free will conjecterally possessed by orgamc life when the mighty necessitating forces unconscious or other，that have the "balancings of the cloud”happen to he in equilibrium，which may or may not be often.
